Causes of Pimples 

Pimples are common during puberty. (Puberty is a stage of our life when child body develops into an adult body. Many hormonal changes occur during this age.  Age of 11 to 17 is a period of puberty.)

Sebaceous glands are located inside the pores of our skin. The outer layer of our skin is always in a process of shedding skin dead cells.

Sometimes this dead skin cell does not get removed properly and blocks pores of our skin resulting in blocking of a sebaceous gland.

Our skin is a place where many harmless bacteria live (for example ‘Propionibacterium Acne’ – a species of bacteria that supposed to cause of acne). Once these pores of sebaceous glands get blocked these acne bacteria get favourable condition to grow rapidly. This bacterium usually feeds on sebum that our skin normally builds and triggers an immune response in our body which cause inflammation of sebaceous gland and build up pus inside.

Common causes of pimples are –

  1. Unhealthy, dirty skin that favours the growth of P. Acne bacterium.
  2. Increased level of hormone Testosterone. (Increased level of this hormone triggers increased production of sebum.)
  3. Eating the food products that have a high glycemic index. (As per ‘Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ there is some evidence that suggest high glycemic food product are linked to acne. Tough there is no controlled trial has been performed on this issue.)
  4. Irregular pattern of eating and inadequate hours of sleep may be linked to acne
  5. Hereditary cause – In some case acne can be hereditary.

Different types of acne

  1. Acne Vulgaris – This is a medical term for a common form of acne.
  2. Comedones – Is basically a closed hair follicle, which is clogged filled with sebum & dead skin cells. It is further divided in two types – Closed comedones (whiteheads) & open comedones (Blackheads)
  3. Pustules – Are inflamed pimples which are filled with white or yellow pus at the centre. It appears like whiteheads with the reddish circle around them.
  4. Papules – Are small pinkish bumps that appear on the skin and rounded in shape as well as rise above the skin surface.
  5. Nodules – These are the papules that grow bigger in size and solid in nature. It is located deep skin layers and most times can be painful.
  6. Cysts – Are pinkish, pus-filled sacs that rise above the skin surface and often leaves the scar on skin when break open. Many times it looks like a boil.

People who get cysts and nodules often prone to get severe form acne.

One can apply ice cubes or can crush them into small pieces.

Wrap the ice cubes or crushed cubes in a clean, sterile, white cloth and apply to the affected area of skin. Hold it for few seconds and remove. Repeat the process after a few minutes.

Though there is no any hard and fast rule one can apply ice on pimples approximately thrice a day to reduce redness and inflammation.

2. Lemon

Take a sterile cotton swab and dip it in a fresh lemon juice and apply it to the pimples before you go to the bed.

Instead of applying lemon juice externally on pimples one can take it internally with warm water early in the morning.

As like lemon juice, you can apply honey directly on pimples with the help of sterile cotton swab.

Keep it for half an hour then clean it with lukewarm water.

One can also mix it with cinnamon and apply it on affected area before going to bed, which will reduce inflammation of the affected skin. Wash the face in the morning with lukewarm water.

4. Toothpaste

You might hear it from your close friends that toothpaste is one of the best ways to get rid of acne. It can be helpful for some people while it does not work at all for others. The reason behind is that toothpaste may contain baking soda and can help dry out acne in some individuals. Usually, it works great if you apply after applying ice on your pimples. Never use gel toothpaste for acne, instead use regular white toothpaste that comes with minimum add on.

Before going to bed wash your face and apply some ice. After few minutes apply toothpaste.

Wash it away in the morning. You will able to see that inflammation of affected area has gone down.

One can apply this during the day time also. Just remember to keep the toothpaste on pimples for minimum half an hour. If your skin is allergic or sensitive to ingredients of toothpaste then you should avoid using it on your pimples.

Steam help you to remove dirt, bacteria and unnecessary oil of face. It keep your face clean and glowing.

Facial steaming helps to soften and moisturize surface layer of your facial skin and removes dead cells. Steam increases humidity and warmth the skin that causes local perspiration and increases blood circulation.

Once you complete steaming your face wash off your face with lukewarm water and dry it with a clean towel.

6. Garlic

7. Baking Soda

Baking soda is another household item which is easily available to everyone.

But before you use baking soda to get rid of your pimples, you must aware that baking soda can cause irritation and extreme dryness to your skin; if your skin is sensitive to it.

To apply it on pimples make a paste of baking soda by adding it (2 tsp of baking soda) to two tablespoons of water. If require you can also add lemon juice to this mixture. Wash your face and apply this paste while your face is slightly damp. Keep it for 3-5 minutes then wash it out with lukewarm water & apply skin moisturizer. Never ever keep this paste of baking soda on your face for more than 5 minutes. It may cause extreme dryness.

8. Peppermint

Peppermint  has many health benefits & can help to recover from acne. It is rich in menthol and give soothing, calming effect that help to reduce redness as well as irritation caused by pimples.

To use it on pimples, crush peppermint leaves and extract juice.

Apply this peppermint extract on pimples and let it rest there for approx 10 to 15 minutes.

Then wash your face with lukewarm water.

Instead of peppermint leaves one can also use peppermint oil which is rich in essential fatty acids & vitamins. Apply 2 to 3 drops of peppermint oil to affected area & massage gently if require. Wash it out after five minutes with lukewarm water

9. Cucumber

To use cucumber as a home remedy for pimples, you need to cut if into the two pieces. Soak these pieces in the water for 60 to 90 minutes. Water soluble vitamins from cucumber will get dissolved in this water.

You can use this water to wash your face or can drink it.

You can also use cucumber to make a homemade face wash by grinding it to make a paste. Apply this paste to affected area for 15 to 20 minutes. After 20 minutes wash out this face mask with warm water.

10. Papaya

As usual almost every fruit provides great resource to multivitamins as well as anti-oxidant and papaya is not and exclusion for this. Papaya help your skin to be soft & smooth. To use papaya as a home remedy for acne, extract its juice and apply it over face for few minutes then wash with water.
