Clavulanic acid is a β-lactamase inhibitor. Many bacteria secrets β-lactamase enzyme to inactivate effect of most of the antibiotics from Penicillin group. So giving plain penicillin type antibiotics become useless until and unless it is combined with clavulanic acid to inhibit secretion of β-lactamase enzyme from bacteria.
